Machine Tolerability in Precision CNC Machining

Precision CNC Machining Tolerability

Precision CNC machining complex parts within tight tolerance specifications requires many factors to seamlessly come together. Tolerance refers to the range allowed for your part measurements to deviate from design specifications. Precision machining often requires parts to be machined within one thousandths of an inch (+/-.001”) to meet design requirements. This is thinner than the width of a typical human hair.

CNC machining is an automated process which combines a human engineered design developed in CAD/CAM software with computer numerically controlled machinery.  Precision CNC machining provides repeatable processes that consistently meet tight tolerances without opportunity for human error. Machining complex parts requires precision machining with multiple axes, such as a 5-axis CNC machine programmed to move a cutting tool along multiple axes simultaneously.

Various materials can be used in CNC machining processes, such as:

  • Steel
  • Stainless Steel
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Aluminum
  • Alloys
  • Aluminum alloys
  • Plastics

CNC Machining within Tolerance Is Critical

It is critical to machine parts within the specified tolerance for proper fit and function. Precision CNC machined parts almost always fit into a larger assembly of mating parts for a switch, housing, bezel or other type of functional assembled product. All components must fit together perfectly within the tolerance specified for proper function.  The slightest deviation from part tolerance could cause a component to malfunction that could shutdown large assembly lines and/or pose a safety risk depending on the functionality of the machined part.

Highly automated processes and assembly lines utilized in automotive manufacturing, for example, rely upon quality components to maintain production requirements. Out-of-spec parts can shut down assembly lines for large OEMs, which equates to a loss of tens of thousands of dollars for every hour a line is shut down. Part designs specify tolerances allowed on critical dimensions for a good reason.

Experienced CAD/CAM part designers and precision CNC machine shops are masters at producing complex parts, within tight tolerance specifications with a reliable, consistent process.
